Reading 1 - Report on Integrated Practice - Response
A professor once told my studio, "architects don't make buildings; they make drawings." It seems that with BIM architects are getting closer and closer to 'virtually' building the buildings they design. Eastman describes this slow march towards an integrated system of parametric objects and coded, machinable parts that will no-doubt fill the gap between the common architectural drawing and the finished, constructed product. On the other hand it seems space-making sound like something that is engineered through code and predicted by algorithms rather than crafted emotion and experience. Sure, the reality of the profession will perhaps require us to be as aware of the intricacies of object data in a model, but I wonder getting too detailed can become a distraction, especially for a small firm. Clearly the idea of what it means to be an architect is in the process of being redefined.
